Feast For Old Grand Dad
The hunt is necessary for the life of the community. The death of the giant sloth known as ‘Old Grand Dad’ gives the small band of humans many of the basic necessities for survival. Its flesh will provide sustenance; its hide will provide protection; and its bones and sinews will provide the raw materials for tool making: from spears to fish hooks, from needle to thread. The animals they kill are the single most important key to their survival. It must not go unaccounted for, and so feasts are held to pay respect and homage to the spirits of the killed, for allowing the people this great gift.
Old Grand Dad will become one with the people of Spirit Lake. His body and spirit will aid them in the future if they aid Old Grand Dad’s transition into the spirit realm. All these things are known to the hunters, the mystics, and the shamans of the First Ways.
