In which Kalerel and Ninaren bite the dust
In an epic battle that spanned over 4 hours of real-time combat, both Kalerel and Ninaren were defeated and the Portal to the the Shadowfell sealed. Kalarel, that evil scion of the demon lord Orcus attempted to open a portal to the Shadowfell that would somehow bring Orcus from his imprisonment in the abyss.
In the other corner we have Ninaren, the scowling elf. Nobody trusts a scowling elf, and for good reason, they are treacherous and cunning. Ninaren proved to be every bit as powerful as she was sly. From mysterious origins she came to threaten the entire elven race with her powerful Spirit Blade.
The sounds of Kalarel’s ritual could be heard booming below, and the party grabbed the chains and were beginning the 30 foot descent down to the (thankfully for them shallow) pool of blood at the bottom. Tara the ranger was incapacitated by the stab of Ninaren’s Spirit knife in the previous encounter and was barely conscious above, but suddenly Mad Martigan came swinging seemingly out of nowhere to grab a chain. As he did so, his robes parted just the slightest bit, and with a blush, she revealed her real name to be Mad Molly!
Now that truly is mad, but there was no time to explain because an arrow arced towards each one of them. Only Thokk was hit, and being slowed by the debilitating effects of the arrow, took a turn and a half to reach the ground. The party slid down the chains, some rapidly enough to take damage, while Stella and Mad Molly chose to hang suspended 15 feet above the bloody floor. Cordelia dropped and charged towards Kalarel. Then the wight made his presence known at the far end of the chamber and fired a grave bolt of necrotic energy at Felipe, who became immobilized. Poppy dropped to the ground and hit the wight, bloodying the foul creature. Then the skeletons, a total of 8, attacked the 3 PCs on the ground, surroundeding them.
Suddenly spiky tendrils emerged from the portal, and they realized there was a Thing in that Portal, and it sent out a psychic attack first on Felipe, whose will turned out to be too strong for the whispers of madness. But its attack soon worked on Thokk, dragging the half-orc against his will 5 squares closer to the portal, which would be instant death. Thokk was then attacked by the spiky tendrils which slammed into him.
Cordelia ignored the skeletons around her and charged up the stairs to Kalarel. She dealt him a solid hit, and he laughed it off, promising her a slow death before pummeling her with his skull-topped mace. After attacking, Kalarel whispered into his Orcus amulet and instantly teleported to the magic circle of defense squarely in front of the portal. Cordelia followed, while Poppy, Stella, and Mad Molly attacked and killed the nearest skeletons before the grave-touched wight responded by breathing new unlife into all the skeletons around it, who instantly stood back up. The ghoul was killed quickly, but the skeletons remained a nuisance till the end.
Ninaren made her appearance, hiding behid the statue of Orcus. She fired an arrow at Felipe who spotted her, then retreated into the shadows behind the statue. inaren would stay hidden for some time before re-appearing atop the statue while trying to escape. Bu in the mean time, the party realized they could isrupt and end the ritual of Kalarel by making religion, heal, and arcane checks. Mad Molly was particularly suited to this and made an arcane and religion check twice a round for the next four rounds and only failed number 8. Poppy then did a heal check to close the portal for the 8th victory.
When Ninaren realized her enemies could and would disrupt the ritual, and thus ruin her secret plans, she realized she had to escape and made a running jump from the statue’s base over to the chains leading out. She failed miserably, and landed at Mad Molly’s feet, only to scamper 15 feet up the chain, eye level with Stella, who still hadn’t descended. Ninaren was at full hit points, and was sure she could destroy the party, but wasnt willing to risk the chance of failure. She did everything she could to climb the 30 feet to safety, but it was the wizard Molly who cast a thunderwave up at her, tossing Ninaren like a limp rag-doll back to the ground without a save.
Now the party was divided with the two barbarians and Felipe at one end of the room hacking at Kalerel while Poppy, Molly and Stella fought Ninaren at the other. Kalarel knocked the Genasi unconcoious and almost knocked out Thokk who was only saved by a healing potion, his first of 3 for the night. He and Felipe working together finally slew Kalarel and Thokk charged across the battlefield to Ninaren. She plinked him with an arrow of ice, knocking him out for the second time in two rounds. Stella ran forward and saved him with a healing potion, and when it was his turn he charged the evil elf.
By this time Ninaren was bloodied but still confident. One barbarian was down, and another was about to be. She pulled out her Spirit Blade and struck at the half orc, whose very soul hung in the balance. Thokk had 10 hp left, thanks to the potion, and Ninaren’s Spirit blade did 1d4+6, so max damage would drop Thokk to zero hp, and his soul would be taken. A bad way to go, and the second time of the night Thokk faced instant death, the first time whilst being pulled into the Thing within the portal.
She did 8 points of damage.
Then an unusual thing happened. Thokk showed uncommonly good judgment. There he stood, in one direction was Stella and a healing potion, in the other was Ninaren, bloodied but still dangerous. With 2 hit points left, Thokk turned to Stella and got his third healing potion of the night, forgoing another chance at being stabbed by the knife, a guaranteed death. It was a proud moment for me as both a dm and a dad to see the player, my son, choose the wise course of action and the survival of Thokk the half orc barbarian. Too many times had he risked his hide already, he knew when to play safe. He wouldnt charge her again until he had a mighty 12 HP. And so he did.
Ninaren was hurt bad and she ran again, desperate now. She made it almost to the chains before Poppy launched the fire arrow that slew her. “Forgive me father for I have failed!” she cried, dying. It was 11:56 pm.
