This week was special because one of our favorite players, Leah, returned for the night. It was a big crowd of 7 players, with grilled hamburgers and sausages for the meal, as well as an excellently tossed salad, and a pallet of potato chips.
Leah played her audacious Captain Ling Wei, warlord and captain of the ostensible Pyrpyl Wyrm +3, pirate brig turned…. Pirate brig. Captain Ling Wei left the party at Shalazar with half the Chibi fanaton. She went off sailing up and down the coast of D Erte, while the rest of the party struck inward towards the long lost city of D Argent. We last heard from the heroes last week as they searched the mausoleum of the abandoned city for clues to the where-abouts of mysterious ‘sky metal’.
The sky metal can be worked into the heroes favorite magical weapons and other implements to give them a bonus against giants and primordials. Meeting the ghost of the last smith, he informs them that the only remaining sky metal was used to fabricate one of the divine engines that keeps Piranoth locked beneath the Dawnforge mountains. The divine engine was placed in the heart of a nearby mountain peak known as Mount Hotenow (no relation to the mountain towering over Neverwinter.)
So the heroes merely need to sneak past the giants besieging D Argent, and find a way to get inside the nearby mountain, and they should have access to the sky metal. Felipe has a map which shows everything important within 10 miles, and they find Mount Hotenow on the edge of the map, and they see a structure has been built on the side of the mountain. The structure is a giants keep, and the mountain itself is surrounded by the main encampment of the hill giants, though it is near deserted now that the giants have marched. The heroes wuill have to infiltrate the camp to get to the sky metal.
As they are making plans to do this, they discover more information on the giants, and learn that the best way to end the hill giants participation in the war is to destroy the leadership. The building could be the headquarters of the giants. The party had taken a scroll of teleportation off of a dead hill giant shaman, and by casting the portal ritual, they then unrolled the map and saw a portal form up near the entrance to the mountainside steading. They now had their means to escape the besieged city.
Arriving in the portal, they found themselves in the midst of a largely deserted giant encampment that stretched for miles in every direction around Mt Hotenow. A few hundred yards away the madssive leaning structure of the hill giant Sterading leaned up against the mouontainside. The heroes began to sneak their way across the camp towards the building and made it to an unguarded, but locked rear entrance. Rook turned into a vampire bat and flew to the rafters of the building. She saw an empty vestibule on the other side of the doors.
Picking their way across, they unlocked the door with Poppy’s skel;eton key, and walked in three abreast to be slammed by the falling spikes trap. Poppy, Hex, and felipe were hit, and it alerted the denizens in the next room to unwanted guests. Acting fast, Poppy opened the doors, and felip raced in invisible to explode into buzzing insects. They faced off against a trio of giants and a big mean guard drake which had a sick attack where it vaulted into the air (ignoring opportunity attacks) and then raking some one with all four claws on the way down.
In the end, the heroes dealt with the room full of giants without breaking much of a sweat, and managed to do it without alerting whoever might be waiting deeper in the hill giant’s steading. Or so they believe…
